The dress code: Dinner Jacket and Decorations (Black Tie)

 

The Annual Dinner is a major event in the Institution’s diary and is well supported by the maritime industry, as well as members of the Institution.  Members and guests represent designers, builders and operators across the entire spectrum of the global maritime industry. 

It is going to be a great opportunity to network over drinks and a 3-course dinner in a fantastic new venue this year - De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms.The President will welcome guests for the drinks reception from 6:30pm, which will then be followed by dinner at 7:30pm.

Dr Bas Buchner

 

 

   Dr Bas Buchner, President of MARIN 

   Better Ships, Blue Oceans: The Role of Research in Safer, Cleaner and Smarter Shipping and Sustainable Use of the Seas

 

Dr. Bas Buchner studied at Delft University of Technology and graduated in 1991. He joined MARIN and was responsible for many offshore model test and simulation projects related to mooring, platform response, offloading analysis and wave impact loading. He specialised in the topics of extreme waves, green water loading and wave impacts. He completed his PhD on the subject of ‘Green Water Loading on Ship Type Offshore Structures’ (2002). He was Manager of the MARIN Offshore Department from 2000 to 2010 and was the leader of many Joint Industry Projects (JIP’s) in the Offshore sector. He has authored more than 50 papers in the field of offshore and ship hydrodynamics. Since 2011, he is President of MARIN. Under his leadership MARIN developed it’s new ‘Better Ships, Blue Oceans’ strategy, focussing MARIN’s mission on cleaner, smarter and safer shipping and sustainable use of the seas.

It is our pleasure to be hosting British Sailor and double Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson OBE DL as our Compere at this year’s RINA Annual Dinner.

Shirley is widely known within the maritime industry, having made a name for herself winning gold medals for Great Britain at both the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. Winner of the prestigious World Sailor of the Year in 2000, Shirley was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to her sport.

Over the past two decades, Shirley has become one of the most recognised faces in the sport of sailing, broadcasting from multiple Olympic Games for the BBC, hosting CNN’s monthly “CNN Mainsail”, and presenting coverage to the sailing world from events like the America’s Cup and SailGP.  Shirley is also the very proud presenter of “Shirley Robertson’s Sailing Podcast”, regularly interviewing the biggest names in the sport of sailing.

The closest tube stations are Covent Garden (Piccadilly line) and Holborn on the Central line, both within easy walking distance. London Euston, Kings Cross, and St Pancras International stations are under a 30-minute walk or a short taxi ride away. All of London’s remaining mainline stations are easily reached by the underground network.

All of London’s international and domestic airports have excellent links into Central London. Heathrow airport is approximately 40 minutes by tube from Covent Garden.
