Introduction

Water-jets are now accepted as a proven technology, particularly for high speed craft and they are increasing their penetration into small craft, leisure, workboat, patrol and military markets. Today, water-jets are becoming the preferred propulsion choice where high efficiency, enhanced maneuverability, shallow draft capability and low maintenance are key requirements.

To further investigate The Royal Institution of Naval Architects and MARIC are providing a platform to discuss the latest developments on water-jet related technology, and to promote the exchange of novel ideas, technological progress, and possible cooperation among interested parties

    Keynote Speakers

    Watjerjet 2022 Keynote Speaker 1

Mr. Göran Grunditz, Manager Hydrodynamics, Kongsberg Maritime

"50 years of waterjet development by combining computational fluid dynamics and model testing"

Mr. Göran Grunditz graduated in Naval Architecture from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm in 2000. He joined Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine (acquired by Kongsberg in 2019), Kristinehamn Sweden, in October 2000 and has since then been working with propeller blade designs and ship propulsion hydrodynamics at the Kongsberg Hydrodynamic Research Centre. A large part of his work has focused on hydrodynamic development of propeller-rudder-hull interaction resulting in the Propulsion Manoeuvring System, PROMAS. In March 2010 he entered the role as Manager of the Hydrodynamic Research Centre a department responsible for hydrodynamic research and design of ship propulsion products. In 2017 he was appointed as a Rolls-Royce Engineering Associate Fellow in Hydrodynamics. Since 2021 he is leading the hydrodynamic organisation of Kongsberg Maritime of which Kongsberg Hydrodynamic Research Centre is an important part.

Dr. Arash Eslamdoost, Associate Professor, Chalmers University of Technology

"The Waterjets of Tomorrow are Being Designed Today"

Arash Eslamdoost is an Associate Professor in Applied Hydrodynamics at the Division of Marine Technology at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden.  He works in the area of applied hydrodynamics with an emphasis on Computational Fluid Dynamics to understand the flow physics around marine vehicles. The goal of his research is to improve the performance of marine craft through reducing hull resistance as well as understanding the propulsor-hull interaction effects for identifying the potential for minimizing energy losses in the flow. Arash Eslamdoost’s research interest can be summarized into the following categories:

    • Ship Hydrodynamics
    • Propulsor-Hull Interaction in Calm Water and in Waves
    • Waterjet Propulsion
    • Foiling Craft
    • Computational Fluid Dynamics

      Waterjet 2022 Keynote Speaker 2

Dr. Wei Zhang, Senior Research Engineer, MARIC

"Bubbly wake flow induced by the water jet: Experimental measurement and Numerical simulations"

Dr. Wei Zhang graduated in Fluid mechanics from Shanghai University. Then he worked as Post-doctor at Dept. of Shipping and marine technology of Chalmers University of technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, and research fellow at National university of Singapore. He joined Marine design and research institute of China in 2016.  Since then been working with ship hydrodynamics and R&D of waterjet propulsion technology. His research interests are ranging from simulation, experimental measurement to modern machine learning technique.

    Waterjet 2022 Keynote 4

    Dr. Mohamed Farhat, Lecturer, EPFL

"Recent research on cavitation phenomenon at EPFL"

Mohamed Farhat was born in Casablanca in 1962 (Moroccan citizen). He graduated at Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Hydraulique et de Mécanique de Grenoble (France. He joined The LMH laboratory in 1986 as research assistant. He completed in 1994 a Ph.D. thesis on Cavitation. He joined the R&D department of Hydro-Quebec in Montréal (Canada) in 1995 where he was in charge of several research projects in the areas of production and transportation of hydropower and mainly the monitoring of large hydro turbines. Since 2001, he is senior scientist at the LMH laboratory, head of the cavitation group. He is also lecturer in Master and Doctoral programs. He is member of the Doctoral Committee in Mechanics.
